Even well-maintained hardwood floors will lose their shine over time. Layers of built-up wax or other polishing products hide the original luster. Tiny dirt particles work their way into these layers and create hundreds of microscopic scratches that break up the smooth, reflective surface. Grease and other contaminants can settle into voids between boards and other areas. All of these and more factors may contribute to the loss of your floor’s original beauty in a surprisingly short time.

In the past, restoring that beauty meant sanding or screening to remove contaminants, along with much of the finish, then applying stain and/or a new finishing layer. We offer both sanding and refinishing services and screening/buffing and restoration. Our optional professional cleaning service can often restore hardwood floors with buildup and minor damage at a considerably lower cost. With our specialized equipment and products, regular cleaning can extend the life of your floor’s finish and save you money.

Caring for Your Hardwood Floor

Proper care is the best way to help ensure that periodic professional cleaning is all that’s needed to keep your floors looking great. Here’s a list of “dos” and “don’ts” for maintaining your floor:

• Do maintain a consistent humidity level in your home. This helps prevent swelling and shrinking that can cause cracking and other damage.
• Do clean up spills as quickly as possible.
• Do use indoor and outdoor mats at entrances to your home to avoid tracking in debris.
• Do use area rugs in high-traffic areas.
• Do avoid damage from sharp objects like high heels and pet claws.
• Do schedule a professional cleaning at least once per year.
• Don’t drag objects across your floor.
• Don’t use rubber-backed or extremely dense mats/rugs on your floors.
• Don’t use steam or hot water to clean your floor. This can damage some finishes, cause the wood to swell and may remove fillers.
• Don’t use oily cleaning products on your floors. These leave a residue that accumulates dust and dirt.
• Don’t use paste wax or acrylic cleaners. These products cause the finish to break down over time.
• Don’t apply wax or industrial-strength cleaning products to your floors.

How it Works

Our professionals will start with an assessment of your floors to see if cleaning will be sufficient to restore your floor. If not, they’ll advise you as to whether screening and restoring or complete refinishing is needed. Otherwise, we begin the relatively fast and simple cleaning process, completely free of dust and harmful vapors. Here’s the process:

1. The floor is thoroughly vacuumed to remove loose debris.
2. If necessary, any accumulation of contaminants like wax or acrylic polish are dissolved and removed with a rotary scrubber and safe stripping solution. Watch the video below to see the importance of this step:

3. A second cleaning with our specialized power scrubber and a safe cleaning solution removes debris embedded in the finish. This process can also help remove microscopic scratches. Here’s a video or our power scrubber in action:

4. If necessary, a bonding agent is applied to the existing floor finish to ensure that the new coating will adhere.

5. A new coat of satin or gloss urethane is applied and allowed to dry.

Save Money!

As you can see from the examples above, we perform only the steps necessary to deep-clean your hardwood floor and restore its shine. Because there’s no intensive screening or sanding, the process doesn’t require containment barriers and can usually be completed in one day. In comparison, sanding and refinishing can span several days and cost many times more.

We’d like to help you preserve your floors and avoid expensive repairs with an annual deep-cleaning. Give us a call to schedule your assessment today. It’s one of the best investments you can make in your home.
